Homework Done. Adventure Begun!

An after school program to get your kids outside and explore the world around them.
(And help them with their homework, too.)

POWERFUL

We celebrate the power that each child has within them. The power to make good choices. The power to achieve great things. The power to make positive changes in the world.

ADVENTUROUS

Adventure can be found all over - not just in remote and wild locations. Being adventurous means facing the unknown and getting away from the day-to-day routine.

CREATIVE

Every child's creativity should be embraced and fostered. Not only in the artistic sense, but in the way they view problems and use creative solutions to overcome obstacles and succeed in life.

KIND

Kindness is something that just about everyone could use a little help with. Not only kindness to our friends and peers, but kindness to the environment we live in. Kindness is one of the keys to a better world.

What we do

Pickup from school and drop off at your home

The PACK Kids will meet directly after school at the parent pickup spot (at Beacon Park School) and take a walk to one of the many surrounding parks. At the park we do homework and then explore, play, make up games, and learn outdoor skills that inspire confidence and self-sufficiency. After the park, we will walk to our house nearby (about 4 blocks from Beacon Park School) and have some more time to have a healthy snack, finish any remaining homework, play games, and have some creative time for the rest of the day. From 5-5:30pm The PACK will be driven back to their homes.

Where is this offered?

Beacon Park School

The PACK Kids is currently being offered to Beacon Park School students in 2nd-5th grades. We would like to keep The PACK families whithin a 5 mile radius of the school to allow for more adventures and exploration.

Why this program?

Outdoors and UNPLUGGED!

The kids will learn essential bushcraft skills, such as knot tying, reading map and compass, plant identification and much more.

They will also learn traditional life skills, such as team work, planning, creative problem solving, time management, and being kind to fellow pack members and classmates. We encourage being outside whenever possible and being stewards to the parks and environments around us. We will learn to clean up trash when we see it and live by the classic camping adage of, “Leave it better than you found it.”

Who is offering this?

An outdoor enthusiast dad

This idea comes from my wife’s and my commitment to spend as much quality time with our children as they grow, learn, and become young adults. I have been a park ranger in Oregon, a mountaineer, a climber, and an all around outdoorsman for most of my life. For the past 25 years I have also been in technology and have worked for major enterprises as well as many startups and have built digital infrastructure and products from the ground up. Now I’m looking to unplug more, get back to the great outdoors and enjoy the non-digital space all around us. This will allow me to spend more time with my children and to help them and other children learn new skills to become more powerful, adventurous, creative, and kind.

about me

Randy Osborn

Linked

I grew up in small towns in Oregon and after graduating high school, I became a park ranger in Winema National Forest. I loved being in the forest and I also had creative and technological ambitions, so I jumped into the first “dot com craze” in the late 90’s and never looked back. My endeavors in the digital space have afforded me the opportunity to travel, explore, and go on adventures in many places of the world, yet I have always maintained a deep connection with being outside and away from technology. Now, while I still do consulting in the digital space, I have found a great way to get out-and-about with my own children, as well as their friends and classmates to share and learn these real life skills.

About my family

The Osborns

My wife and I just moved to the Beacon Park area from Venice Beach (Los Angeles) at the end of the 2024 school year. Our children, Mason (girl - 7) and Dillon (boy - 9) will be attending Beacon Park School as 2nd and 3rd graders for the 2024-2025 school year. We regularly go out on camping and hiking trips and enjoy exploring new and unknown locations as much as possible. It's through these adventures that we thought this would be a wonderful program for others as well.
